selection of boxwood and privwet for landscape around home

A row of Chinese privet, which has light green leaves, was selected to plant behind of a row of boxwood, which has dark green leaves. The privet's height will be taller than the boxwood in one more growing season, so color and height differences will give this area a nice contrast.

Landscaping Plan

These "Before" and "After" photos show the importance of making a landscaping plan before purchasing expensive plants that are not suited for the extreme summer heat we experience in Bryan and College Station. This area was in need of landscaping services, and the homeowner wanted colorful flowers which would attract hummingbirds and butterflies and shrubs which would anchor the area.

BEFORE: In the image below, diseased rose bushes and other plants past their prime were removed, the soil was amended, and all traces of weeds were removed.

AFTER: This is the same area after one growing season. Plants that thrive in the Texas heat were added to the area. The colorful flowers, dark and light green leaves of different shrubs, and addition of plants with different heights added dimension and texture to the landscape. And, the hummingbirds and butterflies found the blooming flowers the first growing season.

Recommended Plants for the Bryan and College Station Area

Our Central Texas location certainly has weather patterns that can be challenging for homeowners who want a beautifully landscaped lawn. Record-breaking heat patterns, water restrictions, and a host of issues with the area's poor clay soil can be challenging when planning a landscape that will thrive for future growing seasons. We can tell you what has worked well in this area of Central Texas.

Recommended Plants

row of wax myrtle

This row of Wax Myrtle shrubs was planted at the back of a yard and will function as a privacy hedge. This client wanted enough room left between the plants so each could grow tall and wide in its natural state.

red yucca plant in flowerbed requires little water

Red Yucca was selected for this flowerbed because it has low water requirements. It is a drought tolerant desert plant native to Texas.

Mealy Cup Sage in Central Texas garden

Mexican Bush Sage has been a successful perennial in flowerbeds in Bryan and College Station. It should be planted in the spring.

Our Work Speaks for Itself

The owners of the property in the photo below asked us to install new flowerbeds in the front and back yards, maintain the flowerbeds, add mulch as necessary to help prevent weed growth and maintain moisture around the roots of plants, replace sod that had died the previous season, and mow the yard on a weekly basis. Careful selection of plants that thrive in Central Texas weather were selected for the flowerbeds and the height of the mower blades was monitored to give the grass a fighting chance of surviving in the triple digit temperatures of 2023.
